Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu teams won the 40th National Throwball Championship concluded at the Vikas Group of Educational Institutions in Nunna near Vijayawada on Wednesday.

Vijayawada: Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu teams won the 40th National Throwball Championship concluded at the Vikas Group of Educational Institutions in Nunna near Vijayawada on Wednesday.

In men’s finals, MP beat defending champions New Delhi by 2-1 sets and bagged senior national championship. Both the teams fought vigorously to win the match. MP team won the match by 15-13, 11-15, 17-15 points.

In women’s section Tamil Nadu defeated defending champions New Delhi with the score of 15-3, 15-6. Defending champions New Delhi faced big upset in both men and women finals and stood in the second position.

Andhra Pradesh Throwball Association and Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) have jointly organised the four-day tournament at Vikas Group of Institutions.

In men’s category, hosts Andhra Pradesh team stood third position by beating Haryana by 15-4, 17-14 and in women’s section, Odisha and Madhya Pradesh teams got third and fourth places.

In the concluding function, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Selection Committee Chairman and former Indian cricketer MSK Prasad presented trophies and prizes to winners.

Speaking on the occasion, he said that Throwball is a purely skill game and cricket players like Mutthaiah Murali Dharan also could not understand it easily. He advised the Throwball Federation of India to develop the game on par with cricket, badminton and kabaddi.

MSK Prasad recalled his past days when travelled in trains from Vijayawada to Kerala to play cricket matches. He added that all sports federations should strengthen the game and conduct matches like cricket IPL, Kabaddi league and Badminton league to develop the games in India.

Throwball Federation of India Chairman Kamal Goswami, treasurer Bala Bachan, AP president Murali Krishnam Raju, secretary E Sulochana, advisor M Satyanarayana Raju, Andhra Cricket Association joint secretary Durga Prasad and Vikas Group of Institutions secretary N Satyanarayana Reddy participated.
