Tanuku: Private doctors went on a 12-hour strike on Tuesday, in Tanuku town of West Godavari district, in protest against the National Medical Council Bill-2017 (NMC Bill) introduced by the Centre.

In response to a call given by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), the private doctors started the strike at 6 am, demanding that the centre withdraw the NMC Bill, which authorised the Ayush doctors to practice modern medicine. The bill will also replace the present Medical Council of India (MCI).

The doctors closed the hospitals and the diagnostic centres for the day in the town. Except emergency, all the remaining medical services were affected due to the strike.

IMA Tanuku unit president Dr V Somasekhar and secretary JVVN Prasad, addressing a meeting at IMA hall here, said that the doctors all over the country decided to observe a black day from 6 am to 6 pm. They expressed concern over the Centre's decision to allow the Ayush doctors and Homeopathic to conduct treatment in Allopathy after getting one-year training.

They warned that this would pose a danger to the public health. Doctors T Ramabrahmam, V Venkatraju, V Sundara Rao, K Srinivasulureddy and others addressed the meeting. The doctors sported black badges to observe the black day against the bill.
