Guntur: Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan demanded that the State government should take measures to prevent spread of diarrhoea in Guntur city within 48 hours.

He said if the government failed to respond, he would give a call for bandh or stay in Guntur city and take up deeksha to exert pressure on the government.

He went to GGH on Friday and visited the diarrhoea patients who are undergoing treatment. He interacted with the doctors and inquired about patients’ health condition.

Later, he went to medical camp set up at Shadikahana in One Town and expressed sympathies with the patients. Speaking to the media, he demanded that the government should impose medical emergency in Guntur city immediately and criticised the government for its failure to prevent spread of diarrhoea in the city during the last 15 days.

He regretted that though people died due to diarrhoea in Guntur, the Ministers, MPs, MLAs and MLCs did not respond and questioned how they would feel if such deaths occurred in their families.

He said the Opposition members should attend the Assembly and raise the issue and added that the BJP MLAs also should respond on the issue. He said though the former BJP ministers in the State Cabinet who quit their posts should also respond.

He questioned if anybody get back the lives of those who died due to diarrhoea. He said the government had no right to play with the lives of people. Following the deaths, the government paid ex gratia to the kin of the victims, Pawan pointed out.

He said, “People never expect ex gratia, it is the responsibility of the government to respond in time.” He pointed out that contamination of drinking water led to diarrhoea deaths in Guntur. He said it is responsibility of the bureaucrats to take action when the people’s representatives failed to respond.

He wondered why the State government also failed to conduct elections to the Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC). The GMC Commissioner neglected people’s problems, he alleged. Pawan held the government responsible for the deaths of people due to diarrhoea in Guntur.

He said the underground drainage works being executed in Guntur lacked quality. He pointed out that the residents of One Town area expressed concern over drinking water contamination.

Replying to a question, Pawan said political parties lacked clarity on the no-confidence motion to be moved against the NDA government.
