Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam Container Terminal Private Limited (VCTPL) has taken up a project with a view to utilise solar energy effectively to create a better eco-friendly environment and improvise operations at the industry-level.

The VCTPL opted to go for a battery operated electric vehicles for internal usage instead of existing diesel driven conventional vehicles and procured eight-seater battery operated vehicles for the internal transport of the terminal. The capacity of the vehicles is 110 km run per one-time charge.

Simultaneously, solar power takes care of the charging of these vehicles and therefore electricity usage or diesel consumption is eliminated. In order to provide electricity to LMVs, the vehicle parking shed itself made up of solar panels with a capacity of 4-kw, which would generate the power required for charging the batteries of the two LMVs.

The total Co2 reduction due to elimination of diesel burning and electricity generation from solar would be to the tune of 24 tonnes of Co2 per annum.
