Srikakulam: An engineering second year student committed suicide by placing his head under a running train at Tekkali on Thursday. Police identified the man as A Harshavardhan, 20, of Lenka Veedhi in Veeraghattam mandal headquarters in the district.

Harshavardhan was studying engineering at AITAM College in Tekkali by staying in a hostel. He reached hostel on Wednesday night but disappeared by Thursday morning. On noticing his absence, hostel warden informed it to the college management who in turn started enquiries and finally found his body on the railway track at Ravivalasa near Tekkali.

On learning of the incident, parents, relatives and student union representatives rushed to the AITAM College and staged agitation alleging that harassment by the management drove the student to suicide.

Tekkali law and order police and Palasa railway police rushed to the spot and shifted the body to Palasa government hospital. Tekkali police went to the engineering college and searched hostel rooms and enquired about the situation in the college.
