Kanigiri: The Prakasam district western area committee of Communist Party of India (Marxist) demanded that the state government start the halted works of Veligonda project immediately.

The party started padayatra at Pamur on Thursday and planning to conduct a public meeting at Markapuram on August 17.

Speaking at the meeting, the CPM state secretary P Madhu said that the state government changed the dates of completion of the Veligonda project several times and now announced Sankranthi as a fresh deadline.

He asked the government that was the Sankranthi announced as part of a poll promise. He demanded that the government immediately start the pending works of the Veligonda by allocating required funds.

He also wanted commencement of works of T-5 canal from Yerragondapalem to Pullalacheruvu and Giddalur west canal and announce RR package on par with the Polavaram ousters and allocate Rs 1,000 crore for them.

He also demanded houses, jobs for the people who lost their lands for the project and asked the government to include Podili, Marripudi and PC Palli villages into the project area.

Madhu announced that another padayatra will start from Yerragondapalem on August 11 and the both padayatras will meet at Markapuram on August 17 and a public meeting was planned on that day.

He requested the public to extend their support for the completion of the project.
