Tirupati: Regional Science Centre (RSC) here has completed 25 years of its existence. The country’s 24th Centre was set up by National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), Ministry of Culture and opened to the public on September 23, 1993 by former President Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma. Since then, the RSC has been creating awareness about science among the students.

The Centre is packed with full of fun and excitement for children and adults through exhibits on various aspects of science and technology. RSC has been extending its services through many outreach programmes like mobile exhibitions in Telugu states. The benefit of the RSC has been enjoyed by more than 80 per cent of the students in and around Tirupati.

RSC has also been instrumental in providing opportunities for young students to compete and participate at national and international level seminars and science fairs. In the early years, 25,000 students used to visit the RSC every year. Now, the number rose to 1.5 lakh. On the occasion of the RSC celebrating silver jubilee year, the central government has allotted a decommissioned Indian Air Force (IAF) two-seater jet aircraft ‘HPT-32 Deepak’ to the RSC for exhibition purpose.

The aircraft was manufactured by the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Bengaluru. It was designed for night flying, weapon training and armed patrol duty. The aircraft was installed in the main park of the RSC three days ago to inform the students on aircraft functioning. Speaking to The Hans India, RSC Project Coordinator R Manigandan said that the students are showing interest to know about IAF aircraft. He further stated a new gallery on non-conventional energy would be inaugurated soon.
