Vijayawada: Diabetes is a lifestyle disorder and it can be controlled by adopting proper food habits and doing regular physical exercises, according to speakers at a seminar ‘Embracing millets for our own benefit,’ organised by Andhra Loyola College commemorating the World Diabetes Day here on Wednesday.

The theme of the World Diabetes Day for 2018 is the Family and Diabetes, and the health awareness seminar was conducted jointly by Jeevaamrutham by Alana.

Ayurvedic expert Pammi Satya Narayana Sastry said that diabetes was prevalent more among youngsters owing to improper food habits and lethargy. “We need to blame the present day parents for health disorders in youth. Instead of promoting healthy food, parents are willfully promoting junk food.”

He said the junk foods could cause cancer and advised people to take preventive measures. He advised people to eat food that nourishes the body. “Junk food will satisfy your taste buds, but it will not provide nourishment, ” he said.

Dietician V Ramakrishna said diabetes could not be diagnosed by a little blood test and three months history was a must to decide the disorder. He said diabetes could not be controlled by allopathic medicines and indiscriminate eating habits were the root cause of spread of type 2 diabetes.

Speakers spoke about the significant impact of millets in their diet and highlighted the dark side of the white rice as well.
