Visakhapatnam: A 35- year old man tried to commit suicide by slitting his throat with a small knife after the local judge sentenced him for 14 years jail besides imposing a penalty of Rs 1 lakh here on Monday.

According to sources, the victim is identified as R Appalanaidu (35) a native of Goligonda area, of M K Patnam mandal in the district. Naidu was arrested along with other seven people while smuggling ganja at Kotha Kota area in 2016 in Visakhapatnam district and had faced trail for the last two years after he came out on bail in 2016.

On Monday, during the final hearing, the local judge had declared that A1 and A8 are innocent and the other six were sentenced for 14 years jail with Rs 1 lakh fine for each accused. Naidu is one among the six convicted. After the judge gave his judgment, the six people came out of the court building.

Naidu who was upset with the judgement, had slit his throat with the knife which was brought along with him. Two Town police shifted the victim to KGH casualty section for treatment.
