Eluru: The police quarters in Akiveedu are in a dilapidated condition with no effort to rebuild the structure. About 16 quarters were built in a donated land in 1992.

The police station which was also built in the same land in 1982 survived the vagaries of nature. The police station is being continued in the same place by conducting repairs to the structure from time to time.

The police station handles about 400 cases every year with the recommended staff strength of 23. However, the policemen were not showing interest to work in the police station as the rents in the town are unaffordable. As a result, the staff strength of the police station is not crossing 15.

The policemen show reluctance to work in this police station because of the costly accommodation. With no quarters, the staff has to pay more for staying in the workplace.

If the police higher officials take up the issue seriously, they can rebuild the quarters and police station too to improve the working of the police station.

Meanwhile, the abandoned police quarters are being used for unlawful activities by anti-social elements during nights. A few encroachments are also sneaked into the costly land close to highway. There is urgent need to act to save the assets.
