Vijayawada: Train passengers will get more amenities at the Vijayawada railway station. The Railway Board has cleared a Rs 40-crore proposal to give a facelift to the railway station, which is an important junction that connects south with north and northeast.

As many as 200 express and passenger trains pass through the station every day. The new facilities would include a foot over-bridge connecting platforms 1 to 10, new rest rooms, retiring rooms, parking lots, new booking office and so on.

Since the existing foot over-bridge is not able to meet the requirements of the passengers, a second foot over-bridge connecting platform 1 to 10 will be constructed. It will have width of six metres and would be very useful to passengers to carry their luggage.

New ticket booking office will be constructed at the west side of railway station at the foot of Gandhi Hill near platform No: 10. This booking office is in addition to the two existing booking offices at the west side of the railway station.

According to Divisional Railway Manager R Dhanunjayulu, the existing booking office at the east side of the railway station will be shifted to cellar so that more space can be provided for the movement of passengers at the railway station.

Existing retiring rooms on the platform number 6 and 7 are very old and getting repairs frequently causing inconvenience to the occupants. Now, the railways have decided to construct new retiring rooms on platform No: 1 and abandon the existing old rooms.

Entire circulation area in front of the railway station at the east booking office will be redesigned for the convenience of passengers particularly for the vehicular movement. The existing area is creating confusion to the people because of bus halts and autorikshaw stand.

Dhanunjayulu said that entire circulating area in front of the railway station will be redesigned so that separate place will be provided for the RTC buses, autorikshaws, Ola cabs, other private vehicles and two-wheeler parking.
