Chirala: The Chirala unit of the BC Federation celebrated the 188th birth anniversary of Savitribai Phule at St Marks community hall on Thursday evening.

The BC Federation leader Dr Guntupalli Subbarao, Utukuri Venkateswarlu, Macherla Mohanrao, Tadivalasa Devaraju, Damarla Srikrishna, Dr Amruthapani, Dasari Saralakumari, Suryaprakasa Rao, Meda Venkatarao and others garlanded the photos of the Jyothiba Phule and Savitribai Phule and paid rich tributes to them.

Dr Guntupalli Subbarao said that Savitribai ignited the social movement for the women rights, and established 18 primary schools to educate girls and women against the ambitions of the upper caste people.

He said that Savitribai received Best Teacher award in 1852, but faced many discriminations for teaching to the backward and downtrodden classes of people.

Later the organizers inaugurated and distributed the Savitribai Life History book to 1000 girls and distributed sarees to 1500 women participated in the meeting.
