Less than two weeks out, the Auto Expo promises to be one of this year’s big ones. In fact, so many concepts that have already been teased – the Maruti Vitara Brezza and GLC-Class, S Class Cabriolet and even the holy Mustang, to name a few – have slipped through the cracks.
This doesn’t mean that this is some kind of a best-of-the-rest list, however; if any of these vehicles slipped out at any other time this year, they’d have our full attention. But automakers know this, and in recent years it’s become seemingly more important to orchestrate the perfect pre-show leak than it has been to nail the public debut.
Some players like Ford and Tata, have leaked an artfully coy image or two to whet the public’s appetite. Others, like Volkswagen and Honda have gone all in with photos and specs long before we’ll get to see the cars in the metal.
Still, until the lights go up at the premiers, there’s a lot of mystery surrounding most of these models. Here’s a look at 10 of the most anticipated ones that are going to debut in the Auto Expo:
Vitara Brezza
Another automaker to join the compact SUV party will be Maruti Suzuki with its Vitara Brezza. Ahead of its global debut, Maruti Suzuki India had also teased the car in a video. Expected to be priced between Rs 7 lakh – Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom), the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza will rival products like Ford EcoSport, Mahindra TUV300 and the upcoming Hyundai Elite i20 based sub-compact SUV.
Honda BR-V
Joining the compact SUV bandwagon will be Honda’s BR-V, an SUV out of the outgoing Brio. Based on Honda's latest design language, the BR-V compact SUV comes with sporty same angular headlamps with projector units and LED position lights, aggressive front bumper housing the round fog lamps with chrome bezels and a very prominent U-shaped chrome slat with the Honda badge on the front grille. The Honda BR-V will come sporting a 1.5-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel and will be a direct rival to the Hyundai Creta and the New Renault Duster.
Toyota Innova 2016
Emerging reports suggest the new gen Toyota Innova will be one of the main attractions of the Toyota Pavilion. Auto-lovers in the country have been waiting for this new Innova since its launch in the Indonesian market. After its debut at the Auto Expo, the Innova is likely to be launched in the domestic market by March this year.
2017 Hyundai Elantra
The 2017 Hyundai Elantra made its debut at the LA Auto Show and has been already launched in South Korea under the Avante moniker. Hyundai has decided to opt for a different design approach with the new Elantra. Rather than basing it on the company's Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design language, Hyundai has chosen to give it a substantially different look. Which is why you see the chrome accented, 5-slat hexagonal front grille, which has a lot of Genesis G90 luxury sedan in it.
Volkswagen Ameo
German auto major Volkswagen (VW) will unveil its compact sedan VW Ameo, which has been designed specifically for the Indian market, at the upcoming Delhi Auto Expo. The Volkswagen Ameo will be manufactured at VW's Chakan facility in Maharashtra. It will compete with the likes of Maruti Swift Dzire, Hyundai Xcent, Honda Amaze, Tata Zest and Ford Figo Aspire.
Datsun GO-Cross
Datsun India plans to cook up a storm with its new GO Cross Concept version that was unveiled last year in the Tokyo International Auto Show. This flagship product of the Datsun is based on the GO+ MPV and will borrow an identical 1.2L petrol engine coupled with the 5-speed gearbox. Besides this, an entry-level small car, the Redi-GO hatchback would also be showcased. It will hold the same engine from the Renault Kwid since the car is developed on the Nissan-Renault CMF platform.
Jaguar XE
Set to be the most affordable Jaguar in India, the XE sedan will be one of the first launches of the 2016 Auto Expo. Slated to be launched on February 3, the first day of the Auto Expo, the Jaguar XE is also the first product in its segment to come with an aluminium-intensive monocoque frame, which is claimed to make it the most advanced and refined sports saloon in its class. The Jaguar EX will be powered four-cylinder, two-litre petrol engine offered in two power trims - 197bhp and 237bhp. While the former comes with a peak torque of 320Nm the latter develops 240Nm of peak torque.
