The first consignment of made-in-India Renault cars will reach the country later this month.Renault India has started its operations in Sri Lanka by launching the made-in-India Kwid budget small car and Duster compact crossover. The French automaker has appointed Associated Motorways Private Limited (AMW) as its local partner.

Earlier, Mr. Sumit Sawhney, MD, Renault India, stated that Kwid will be exported to Sri Lanka and other neighboring countries starting from this month.

The first consignment of Renault cars for the island are expected to reach by mid-June. Given that both Renault cars in question are manufactured at Chennai, the transportation cost and time would be low.

Export of the Kwid to Sri Lanka comes soon after that nation relaxed its import duty structure on small cars to a considerable extent. Like in India, the Kwid will lock horns with the Maruti Alto 800 which is also a part of AMW’s wide portfolio.

Speaking at the launch event in Colombo, Mr. Sawhney announced that Renault will open 5 sales and 5 service outlets in the country next year. Meanwhile, AMW’s newly inaugurated Renault distributorship facility at Gangarama in Colombo will serve the brand’s customer in the little island.
The Renault Duster is positioned as a cheaper alternative to the Japan-made HR-V which is immensely popular in Sri Lanka. Prices of both products are yet to be announced.
