Launch of the Maruti Ignis micro crossover is reported to have been pushed further by 3-6 months. The objective of the postponement is to clear out the existing backlogs of Vitara Brezza and Baleno.
The two new brisk selling Maruti products are currently keeping Maruti’s assembly lines fully occupied. Even then, each of these two models has a waiting period of around 8 months.
Launching yet another volume-oriented model at this juncture would further deepen the capacity crunch thereby worsening the demand-supply gap. As of now, the combined backlog of orders for the Brezza and Baleno exceed 1 lakh units.
Economic Times reports that the Ignis which was originally scheduled to enter trial production towards the end of September is now pushed further to end of November. The market launch is now expected to take place in 2017. Occupying capacity for trial production just ahead of festive season would hamper deliveries of the existing products.
Maruti has already stretched its installed production capacity so much that adding Ignis without easing the pressure would lead to unacceptable waiting periods. Suzuki’s wholly owned Gujarat factory is set to go on stream in early 2017. It is expected to start operations with the Baleno.
So once the production of Baleno is shifted to the new facility, Maruti’s existing Haryana facilities would be able to make room for the Mahindra KUV100 rival.
