Launched at an astonishingly low price tag of just INR 2.38 lakhs, new Datsun Redi-Go managed to become the best-selling Datsun car in India almost immediately.
But in spite of that, the car is no where when it comes to competing with rivals in the segment, as far as sales numbers are concerned. In the three full months of sales, Redi-Go registered sales of about 10,500 units. In the same period Maruti sold over 46,000 units of Alto, while their alliance partner Renault sold 30,000 units of Kwid.
Competing with India’s best selling car Maruti Alto 800, and the new rising star Renault Kwid, Datsun Redi-Go is designed as an Urban Cross. Now, in order to boost sales ahead of Diwali season, Datsun India has announced the launch of new Red-Go Sport Edition. It will feature some cosmetic changes, while engine will remain same.
Redi-Go is powered by the same three-cylinder petrol 800 cc engine which powers Renault Kwid, it delivers 54 PS @ 5678 rpm and 72 Nm @ 4386 rpm. Mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, this engine claims to deliver a mileage of 25.17 kmpl. Weighing only 640 kgs, the reason Datsun has managed to keep the price of Redi-Go aggressive is due to 98% localization levels.
Arun Malhotra, Managing Director, Nissan Motor India Pvt. Ltd. said, “Datsun redi-GO is bringing a lot of new energy and freshness to the entry car segment. Its eye-catching design and best-in-class features are getting noticed as more and more customers choose to go with redi-GO”.
“We have started deliveries of redi-GOs this month to customers across the country and are delighted by the way Datsun redi-GO is being embraced by the younger generation in the country”, Arun Malhotra added.
Designed for young generation of car buyers, Datsun says that the redi-Go is for India’s ready-to-go generation. The same has been beautifully captured in their official TVC.
Based on the Renault-Nissan Alliance’ CMF-A platform, there are plans to launch more cars on the same platform in the future. Most likely a sub 4 meter sedan, crossover and SUV. Apart from this, there are also reports that the Redi-Go will get a 1.0-liter engine in the near future along with an AMT gearbox.
