Hyderabad: The garbage is strewn all over the vicinity of the famous Balkampet Yellamma Temple which is thronged by the devotees throughout the year. Within 200 metres of the holy site, one can find large heaps of trash with stray animals fighting over the crumbs found in it.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) seldom collects the garbage which shows the corporation’s indifferent attitude towards the issue, local people said.
Lingaiah Nagar resident Deepak said, “This has become a permanent problem of the area. For the last six months I have been continuously witnessing large quantity of garbage near the temple and it clearly proves the negligent attitude of GHMC towards a critical issue.”
“In spite of the publication regarding the problem several times in The Hans India, the GHMC is not properly reacting to rectify the problem. Dengue and other diseases are increasing day by day,” he feared.
Even as the citizens of Hyderabad are celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi, the temple is gathering a fair amount of devotees daily in the current festive season. Tilak Pattnaik, a Sanjeev Reddy Nagar resident says, “I used to visit temple during every festive season.
However, garbage is still there and nobody can travel through the road holding their breath for a while to avoid the unbearable stink that originates from the waste.”
Corporator of Sanath Nagar Kolanu Lakshmi Bal Reddy told The Hans India, “We will definitely speak to the GHMC officials for a permanent solution to the issue and tomorrow we will make sure for clearing all the garbage from the site.”
Added to the stink, there is also presence of a large contingent of stray dogs creating obstruction for pedestrians and commuters. A motorist, Rahman, said, “The garbage occupies almost one-fourth space of the road resulting in traffic congestion and this road serves as a major junction between SR Nagar and Lingaiah Nagar.”
