Says director Janardhana Maharshi. "If women feel that the film is vulgar in any sense I will stop the screenings of the film," he adds Nagaraj Goud With more than 90 Telugu and Kannada films to his credit and an experience of 18 years in the industry, noted writer Janardhana Maharshi who turned director with 'Devasthanam' a year ago, chose 'Pavithra', that is starkly different from his first venture. "'Devasthanam' was promoted as Tirupathi laddu kind of cinema whereas 'Pavithra' is a mirchi bajji kind of film. If 'Devasthanam' had roots with tradition, 'Pavithra' is aimed at the current system of politics at large. It is a bold film," the director says.

Maharshi, who initially wanted to make the film in Kannada, was keen on an actress who has a wide reach and the necessary experience to pull the character off before approaching Shriya Saran. He adds, "Her immediate reaction was 'no' when I first narrated the subject, as she was apprehensive. However, after listening to the whole script, she changed her mind and within no time we were on sets." The director, who wrote the dialogues for SS Rajamouli's 'Eega' last year is sure that his writing skills will be on full display. "With a sense of responsibility I directed 'Pavithra' but I've given 1000 per cent when it comes to my first love- writing. A sex worker's life is full of hurdles as she encounters different kind of people in a bid to earn her bread and butter and in the course turns wiser and mature. What happens if she decides to take a plunge into politics? It's a sequence of events between her and politicians who are looting the country," he says.

It was the inspiration that he drew from filmmakers like Balachander and Shyam Benegal that made him to attempt a subject like 'Pavithra'. "Although the legendary filmmakers made three films on sex workers, each subject was drastically different from the other. After 'Devasthanam', I was clear that I had to go ahead with 'Pavithra' regardless of the consequences. When I told my producers that I will treat the film in a Balachander and Benegal way, they were more than happy to hear it out and extend full support to me," he reflects. Maharshi is confident that all sections will embrace the film. "If women feel that the film is vulgar in any sense, I will stop the screenings of the film. Everybody can watch the film without any negative thoughts. It will be like a massage to brains," he maintains. Co-starring Kaushik, Sai Kumar, Roja and Tanikella Bharani, among others, the flick is set to release on June 7 all across in AP in more than 500 screens.
