Rainbow Hospital held Children’s Day celebrations on Thursday. It focussed on protection of premature babies and to bring awareness around pre-term births in India.

Actress Namrata Shirodkar attended the programme as the chief guest. She narrated the pain and struggle she had to undergo when she gave a premature birth to her son Gowtham.

She also said the support and state-of-the-art services extended by the doctors in Rainbow Hospital during that time was unforgettable. “Gowtham was born with a weight of 1.46 kgs only. At that time, we faced many difficulties.

The plight we had gone through while Gowtham was growing, haunts me till today. But now, I am a happy mother. Gowtham is cute and a healthy kid. It is really a task to doctors to save the premature child. There should be awareness and education on this problem especially in parents,” she said.

“Prematurity is the leading cause of infant deaths in India. Around three lakh preterm’s annually die due to complications in India. It is not recognised as a serious problem still in our country. In fact it is a public health problem. Its awareness levels are also discouraging.”

“Rainbow Hospital has been providing state of art services and medical treatments to many pre-term babies and giving a new lease of life to many such kids. To fight against preterm births, we launched “Delivered too soon” action report also. Its purpose is to raise awareness on this problem” said Dr Dinesh Chirala from Indian Foundation for Premature Babies and critical care expert in Rainbow Hospital.

“We are also planning to provide training services on handling this problem for the professionals in the government sector under NRHM scheme,” he added
