Charmme in 'Jyothi Lakshmi'

Speaking to media persons, Puri said that he has been yearning to make the film for long. “I remember narrating the script to Charmme six years ago and I was keen on her essaying the role. My respect towards her has increased manifold after directing her,” said the director.

The film is an adaptation of Malladi Venkata Krishna Murthy’s book ‘Mrs Parankusham’. It was written 40 years ago. “When I was still an assistant director I met the author for the rights of the book. He said had sold it to someone for Rs 100. This happened 20 years ago.

When I met him after turning a filmmaker, I snatched the rights by paying him Rs 2 lakh. He was still worried about the guy who paid him Rs 100. When I enquired about the guy’s status, Murthy, to my amusement, said he expired. After a few years, I met him at my office and he was still worried about the guy who passed away.

He returned the cheque that I had given him. I was like, ‘Entha manchodu enti ra babu eena (How can he be such a good man)?’ Finally I handed him another cheque,” he said and added that he tweaked the story to give it a contemporary look. Charmme said that character was close to her real life and she behaved herself on the sets than acting.
