After failing to meet release deadlines in the past, ‘Rudhramadevi’, Gunasekhar’s ambitious period drama, will be finally opening in cinema halls on September 4. The maker announced this at a presser in Hyderabad on Friday. He was accompanied by lead actress Anushka Shetty, his wife Ragini and children.

“We are in the final leg of post production but we will arrive on September 4. Besides Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam versions will be releasing on the same date. We are also planning to release the Hindi dubbed version at a later stage,” said Gunasekhar. “Since it was shot in 3D, designing VFX turned out to be a laborious process. Nonetheless, it will be releasing in 2D screens too.”

Touted to be one of the most expensive Telugu films ever to be made, it narrates the tale of erstwhile ruler of Kakatiya dynasty, Rudhramadevi. “It is as authentic as it can get; we didn’t distort history for cinematic liberty. My nine years of research coupled with inputs from the likes of M Sivaprasad, Thota Prasad and Paruchuri Brothers went into the project,” he said.

Known for his grand production designs, Gunasekhar said that he didn’t make ‘Rudhramadevi’ for its opulence. “I read about Rudhramadevi when I was in school; since then her valour stayed with me. I never thought I would direct her story but after turning a filmmaker, I decided to tell it one or the other day. Unlike Hollywood we are not into war dramas and ‘Rudhramadevi’ is one such film.”

The director confided that even before he approached Anushka to enact the titular role, his well-wishers and a section of the society wanted her to play the part. “She has literally lived the character and was of immense support throughout the making. She excelled in sword combat and horse-riding sequences.”

The maker further said that while Rana’s character (Chalukya Veerabhadra) has a romantic side to him, Allu Arjun’s role as Gona Ganna Reddy will last for an hour. Keeping her speech brief, Anushka, dressed in casuals, said, “You can see the hard work that we’ve put in for the film. We will be promoting it aggressively.”
