While he occupied envious spotlight a few months ago for being the director of Chiranjeevi’s 150th flick, Puri Jagannadh, who will be celebrating his birthday today, has moved on. Currently occupied with his flick with Varun Tej, the director, nonetheless, is open to direct the abhineta-turned-neta.
“He liked the first half (of my script) and regarding the second half he said he will get back to me. However, he announced to the media he didn’t like the second half. Had he said it to me I would have rectified the errors,” insisted Puri in Hyderabad on Sunday.
“Having said that I’m still open to direct his next.” Known for the speed with which he completes a film, Puri has almost wrapped up ‘Loafer’. “Barring five days of work, the shoot is over. It is an emotional drama between a son (Varun Tej) and his mom (Revathy) and will be on the lines of ‘Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi’,” he shared. “We are contemplating to change the title as producer C Kalyan and my well-wisher Ram Gopal Varma feel that it will send a wrong notion about the film.” Puri foresees Varun Tej going a long way in the industry. “He will be a big star in the future and will make Naga Babu garu very proud. He is very natural in front of the camera. He has that innocence (in him) which will work big time,” he said. Branded for joining forces with big stars, Puri is now working with relatively smaller actors. His next is with newcomer Ishanth, nephew of ‘Mahatma’ producer CR Manohar.
When asked about it, he maintained, “There will be occasions where stars will not call you, so better you work with smaller heroes. You should never stop working. “I immerse myself in work all the time and I love working. It’s been 15 years since I’ve turned a director. I only feel tensed when I’m short of work,” he stated. One of the most sought after directors in Tollywood, Puri has no intention to make a film like ‘Baahubali’.
“It’s easy to watch ‘Baahubali’ by procuring an Rs 100 ticket than making it,” he chuckled. “I don’t think I can make such films. I get bored of a script after investing two months on it.” Reflecting back at his 15-year career, Puri is happy with his progress. “In the 90s I wrote a small story and showed it to my parents. Impressed by it they gave me Rs 25,000 and asked me to try my luck in the industry. No parents would do such things generally but they did.
I thank them for it. I’m happy and people around me too are happy,” said Puri, who has choc-o-bloc schedule lined up. “I’m committed to introduce HD Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil Gowda once I wrap up my film with Ishanth, a Telugu- Kannada bilingual. I have a script ready for Mahesh Babu and I’m also working on a script for Allu Arjun,” signed off Puri.
