Every weekend news paper edition has a movie review that some readers eagerly read while others skip. Some use it to decide the movie of their choice or to know more about a new release.

Are these movie reviews relevant? Do they convey the complete picture? Are they beneficial in letting us decide whether we will like a movie or not? Movie critics play a major role in reviewing these movies and can easily help a movie succeed or fail. These are questions that need to be answered to decide whether movie reviews are important or not. Many of the major national movie critics in USA have been laid off or retired, according to a Time magazine report. There have also been a lot of commentaries on the pros and cons of movie reviews. The internet has erased boundaries and reviews by critics across the world can be read from any country.

One does not need to live in Chicago to read Roger Ebert review of the The Martian. The movie critic writing the review often writes the review from his or her perspective. Reviewers are also very subjective since they deal with emotional subjects and bring in their past biases into the review. There have been a lot of debates on the relevance of critics reviews to readers who have their own preferences. Critics do help in providing a perspective and comparing and contrasting with other classics from similar genres. Recently, some critics have been accused of taking money and writing good reviews even for poor movies; they are called paid reviews. This affects the importance of reviews and people will not trust reviews anymore. Many people don’t like movie reviews because it ruins the whole story for them. Whereas other people enjoy having reviews because it tells them if the movie is good or not.

The surprise in watching the movie is lost reducing the excitement. Many movies release every week especially in Mumbai , Hyderabad and Hollywood. There are too many movies and too less time to see all of them. Movie goers are very interested in picking an entertaining movie for their weekend. Many use these reviews to filter through the many movies that are being released and find out more about the plot, the actors, characters, and important scenes to keep an eye out for. It eases their task of choosing a movie that they feel will provide them an entertainment.

Many readers eagerly look forward to read reviews and some even read reviews after returning from a movie to see how others are reacting to the movie. To understand the topic better, our newspaper searched the internet and also conducted a survey. We used the survey monkey website that allows users to create their own surveys. We listed a few questions and sent a link to the survey article to many of our friends. Most of them suggested that they always read reviews before watching the movie but do not find the reviews useful all the time. Picture of the survey results are attached below.

In conclusion, we believe that reviews are good. They are like a quick summary of the movie and help us in deciding the right movie given the many choices. We love watching the movie previews in the movies during intermission. They give us a strong idea on whether we should watch a movie or not. Regarding, critics, it takes a lot of movies to find the critic who thinks closest to you. Once that critic is found, then the critic’s reviews can be relied upon to select a new movie more reliably. Just like the movie rating system which tells us who can watch the movie, the movie review is important and tells us a summary of what is exciting about the movie.
