Senior actor Ranganath passed away under mysterious circumstances at his residence here on Saturday. He was 66. The preliminary investigations into the death of the actor revealed that he had committed suicide by hanging from ceiling of the kitchen. The Gandhi Nagar police, who are investigating said that Ranganath was living alone, with a domestic help – Meenaxi doing household chores. However, the suicide took place after she left the house.

The Gandhi Nagar police, who are investigating said that Ranganath was living alone, with a domestic help – Meenaxi doing household chores. However, the suicide took place after she left the house.

Police said that Ranganath went into depression after death of his wife six years ago. They also found the word ‘destiny’ written on the walls of kitchen but no suicide note was found. As part of investigation the police are likely to question the maid, as ‘transfer of bonds to Meenakshi’ was mentioned on the walls. AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao expressed their condolences. Born in Madras in 1949, he graduated from Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati and worked as ticket collector in Indian Railways before pursuing his passion- acting. He burst on to the scene with ‘Budhimantudu’ in 1969. Actor-director Giribabu, taking Ranganath under his wings, introduced him as a hero with ‘Chandana’, which released it 1974.

Ranganath was the key figure in SS Rajamouli’s soap opera ‘Shanthinivasam’. The serial, which went on air early last decade, ruled TRP’s. The actor’s charisma was considered as a key factor for its success. He also directed actor Sivaji-starrer ‘Moguds Pellams’. Saddened by the news, Telugu film fraternity condoled the actor’s death.
