Tollywood movies or Telugu soaps no longer seem to interest Gen Y. Youtube fever has caught on and the tech-savvy generation is increasingly getting hooked on to Youtube videos. Youtube has emerged as a career alternative for many talented youngsters in the recent past. The virtual platform opened up new vistas for enthusiasts who want to try their hand in genres like comedy, music and dance.

A 13 minute Telugu short film, ‘The Viva’, opened the doors of Tollywood for Harsha Chemudu, an engineering graduate. The film is all about a viva test, where an external examiner poses questions to students. It went viral on Youtube and has received 78 lakh hits so far. ‘The Viva’ was posted on Youtube in 2013 and Harsha started receiving offers to feature in Tollywood films in the same year. Since 2013, he has worked in about 33 films.

Raj Tarun is another Youtube celebrity who made it big in Tollywood. Tarun, who acted in popular movies like Kumari 21F, is an engineering drop-out. He has acted in around 52 short films before he became a Tollywood star. Being a Youtuber has emerged as an attractive career option, just like choosing to be an engineer or a doctor. “The tinges of stardom and fanfare associated with being a Youtuber makes it attractive.

Moreover, it can never get monotonous,” says Jahnavi, a Youtuber from Vizag. Another Youtuber, Sabarish Kandregula of ‘The Viva’ fame, quit a software job to pursue his interest in film-making. He shot the popular short film soon after he quit his job.Youtubers typically work from home and make money through a combination of advertising and sponsorships. Their pay also depends on the number of viewers and subscribers to their channel.

Anyone with a camera and an internet connection can post videos on Youtube. It is due to this ease that many people are taking to Youtube to showcase their talent. Youtube channels like Wirally South, Chai Bisket and Mahathalli are trending as they pander to the tastes of young Telugu audience. Their videos usually revolve around themes like growing generation gap between parents and children, relationships and break-ups.

They are a big hit in the Youtube market as any young viewer can relate to these videos. Kothuri Kaushik, a third year engineering student from K L University, Guntur, aspires to start a Youtube channel soon. He said, “Videos with regional content are in great demand. They have good viewership. We have Telugu youtube channels, but they are few in number.” Kaushik draws inspiration from Tanmay Bhat of AIB (All India Bakchod), an edgy comedy channel on Youtube.
