Hyderabad: A vibrantly more robust Hyderabad Sailing Week will get underway at the Hussainsagar Lake with the competitive stage commencing after the inauguration by Governor ESL Narasimhan on Monday.

Being held under the auspices of EME Sailing Association and Secunderabad Sailing Club, the feature of this edition is the conduct of multiclass sailing championships, which is a first for the host.

Maj Gen Sanjeev Khanna, Vice-President, Laser Class Association of India (LCAI) said that this is first time two courses have been made at the lake in order to accommodate seven major events. “We will see all senior Olympic classes being sailed together in two racing courses.

We are expecting the turnout of at least 200 this time, which makes it the largest in the country. Of course, it will be a big challenge to conduct seven events at a time. The fact is that we are prepared, thanks to good practice sessions and dress rehearsals,” he said on Friday.

Stating that the venue is to host an international championship next year, Khanna said the 15 countries are ready to participate in the event. The lake has undergone a tremendous makeover, which has drawn appreciation from all those who made spot assessments.

However, Khanna feels that although Indian sailors were talented they needed more international exposures to survive the competition at the highest level. Bhuvan Khare, Secretary, Laser Class Association and former international Rajesh Choudhary opined that the weather and wind conditions were perfectly favourable to hone ones skill in boat-handling and understanding wind shifts.
