Tandur: Apostgraduate in Business Management from Australia, after quitting his job that fetched him a fabulous sum of Rs 2.5 lakh per month Down Under, has found his calling in agriculture and animal husbandry. Thanks to support from his in-laws, he has a penchant for rearing Ongole-breed cows at Basheerabadin Vikarabad district. It all began after he got married to Poonam of Basheerabad.

RatanYarlagadda, son-in-law of DrRamprasad and Saroja Devi of Basheerabad, currently has 35 cows in his shed, of which three or four are in milk-yielding stage. His unit’s daily milk output is at least 70 liters, which he uses to feed the calves and for domestic purpose. He has been growing fodder in six acres just to feed the cows. He provides them nutritious food, after availing of subsidies provided by the government on cattle feed.

He maintains sufficient stocks of hay and green fodder. As part of efforts to multiply the Ongole breed, he is tending an Ongole-breed bull. At the time of purchase, he subjects the cows and bulls to all kinds of medical tests. He has appointed a veterinary doctor to keep a close watch on their health. His cows have won several prizes in various competitions held till date.

The cow shed has electric lamps and fans. Three servants keep it clean. He has installed five CC cameras to monitor activities in the shed whenever he is in Hyderabad. He has affectionately named the cows Radha, Avanti, Rani, Godavari, Kaveri, Lakshmi and so on. The bull is named as Eshwar. He proudly acknowledges the support he receives from his wife and in-laws in tending the cows.
