Hyderabad: A two-and-a-half-years-old boy died after falling into an open sump at at Abhigna Preschool at Hills Colony in Vanasthalipuram on Wednesday afternoon. The boy was identified as Vachan. His mother Vijaya joined the school as a teacher only two days back and she took the child there along with her. The boy was found missing in the afternoon and after a frantic search, a worker saw the boy lying dead in the sump at the school building. The sump is about eight feet deep. It was left open without a lid on it and the child could have accidentally fallen in it, police said.

Enraged over the incident, the parents Anil and Vijaya and their relatives staged a protest at the school and blamed the tragedy on the management. When the media rushed to the spot and tried to meet the management, the latter refused to meet them and explain about the incident. Police registered a case of death by negligence against the school management for leaving the sump uncovered. Balala Hakkula Sangham demanded that the government frame guidelines for the pre-schools. The Sangham representatives said this was not an isolated case, and that there were no safety or security guidelines for such schools. Repeated complaints by parents' groups for effective guidelines had fallen on deaf ears, they said.
