Hyderabad: Driver of an APSRTC bus was charred to death while 15 passengers travelling in it suffered injuries after it collided with a DCM van in Bowenpally area in the wee hours of Tuesday.

The driver of the bus identified as Gangadhar, 40, a native of Nizamabad, was trapped inside his cabin and was charred to death. Many passengers managed to jump off the bus to safety, the police said that the injured passengers were rushed to Gandhi Hospital for treatment.

According to Bowenpally sub-inspector K Srinivas Rao, the ill-fated RTC bus (AP 25 Z 0064) which belonged to the Armoor bus depot of Nizamabad district was on its way from Nellore district in AP to Armoor in Nizamabad. The incident took place near Sri Latha Gardens in Bowenpally around 3.30 am when a DCM van carrying a load of maize hit the bus head-on while trying to escape from a vehicle coming from the opposite direction.

The impact was so intense that it ruptured the diesel tank of the bus. The fire appeared to have started from the ruptured tank inside and soon flames erupted in the bus. The collision had left the cabin of the bus crumpled and the driver got trapped inside the police said.

Minutes before the tragic incident, Gangadhar had taken to the steering from his co-driver Madhu at Jubilee Bus Station. Fire tenders rushed to the spot and brought the flames under control. However, it was too late to rescue the driver.

Meanwhile, Transport Minister P Mahender Reddy and Armoor MLA A Jeevan Reddy visited the spot. The TS government announced an ex-gratia of Rs 6 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased, apart from offering a government job to one of the family members of Gangadhar.

A case has been registered under Section 304 A (Causing death by negligence) of the IPC. Further investigation is underway.
