Condemning the alleged rape of a 25-year-old girl from Sikkim by a doctor in the national capital as 'extremely disturbing', activist Binalakshmi Nepram on Friday warned of a strong protest if an attempt is made to hush up the matter.
"I came to know that in Hauz Khas, a doctor did this to a Sikkim girl. She is currently admitted in the AIIMS and police is taking her statement. We are extremely disturbed with this news and we are with the victim as first line of support. If there is any attempt to hush up the matter then we activists will come out," Nepram told ANI.
She also condemned the surge in rape cases across the country.
"We have done a lot of work in this regard, we have done lot of sensitization programs, but yet it is extremely unfortunate that the rape has not stopped, whether it is of northeastern people or other wise of women in this country," Nepram said.
Meanwhile, another women activist, Jagmati Sangwan also expressed her outrage stating that girls from northeast are particularly vulnerable and are therefore targeted.
"This is absolutely shocking as a doctor is involved in the rape of a northeastern girl. They are more vulnerable and that is why they are targeted," she said.
The girl from Sikkim was allegedly raped by a doctor in the Hauz Khas area of the city. The police have initiated an inquiry in this matter following a complaint by the victim.
