Hyderabad: Hyderabad police have claimed to have averted a major terrorist strike with the arrest of Harakat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HuJI). A police officer on condition of anonymity told The Hans India that the HuJI activists had planned terrorist attacks on heritage structures, including Taj Mahal in Agra.
The clandestine operation by the terrorists came to the light during the investigation into passport scam involving HuJI terrorists. The city police, alerted by the operations carried out by illegal migrants to secure passports to terrorists, directed their attention on the activities of terrorist organisation. It led to arrest of several suspected terrorists.
What shocked the police, according to sources, was the revelation by one of the suspected terrorist Mohammed Nasir (52). He was the prime accused in the passport scam. “If Nasir and his partners-in-crime remained free, they would have committed unimaginable crimes,” a senior police officer said.
Nasir was quoted as telling the police that he had helped an Indian Mujahideen member, who was one of the accused in Dilsukhnagar bomb blasts in 2013, flee country through porous borders of India-Bangladesh. “Nasir helped Abdul Jabbar, the leader of HuJI in 2010 sneak into West Bengal from Bangladesh. He then gave shelter to Jabbar at Panipat in Haryana.
During his 15 days stay in India, Jabbar along with Nasir, visited Taj Mahal in Agra, Red Fort, Qutub Minar and other heritage structures, Ajmer Dargah in Rajasthan and several other places,” the officer said. The duo conducted recce at the heritage and religious structures mostly located in north.
After learning about the security at the historic places, Jabbar returned to Bangladesh to hatch a plot. But Nasir remained in India. The officer said that in 2010, as soon as Nasir entered India, he met one Maulana Alim-Ul- Islam Mandal, a 35-year-old Indian national from West Bengal in Delhi.
They discussed a strategy to establish strong base for HuJI in India by building a dargah, which could be used to train activists. Mandal, who is also a trainer of HuJI, had been shifting his residences frequently and currently living in Goa.
