A 25-year-contract employee at DRDO, M Varsha allegedly committed suicide on Monday by hanging herself due to the harassment for extra dowry from her husband and in-laws. Varsha's parents alleged that she had been killed by her husband's family as there were injuries on her body.
Varsha had been working in DRDO for nearly three years and married Mr Ranjith Goud who is a Railway employee in March 2015. At the time of marriage, Varsha's parents had given property and jewellery worth around Rs 80 lakh but Mr Ranjith allegedly demanded more dowry asking her to bring documents of the 6-acre agricultural land that she would inherit from her father and Rs 10 lakh cash.
Varsha’s cousin Mr Venkateshwar Rao informed that the demand for the six acre share from the agricultural land in Mahabubnagar and also Rs 10 lakh in cash was assured by his Uncle that they would discuss when they will meet for Dussehra. Varsha soon after her marriage had complained of dowry harassment but her parents had tried to convince her by saying that things would get better with time.
Varsha on Sunday evening at around 5.30 pm poke to her mother informing her about their return journey from Goa but after they reached home on Monday morning at around 5 am, she allegedly committed suicide in her in-laws’ home an hour later. A case of dowry death under Section 304(b) has been registered based on the complaint filed by Varsha's parents.
