A gang of 14 people involved in manufacturing and sale of adulterated spices in Hyderabad, Delhi and Raipur have been busted by the South Zone police of Hyderabad, after the DGP received a tip-off on the racket.

Hyderabad: A gang of 14 people involved in manufacturing and sale of adulterated spices in Hyderabad, Delhi and Raipur have been busted by the South Zone police of Hyderabad, after the DGP received a tip-off on the racket.

“The gang includes 11 businessmen from Begum Bazar and three people from Uttar Pradesh. They were manufacturing adulterated spices using iron oxide, sodium hydrosulphite, synthetic gum and paints, to give odour, colour and taste,” said South Zone DCP V Satyanarayana.

The kingpin of the racket, Rajesh Gupta who hails from Uttar Pradesh, had hired open lands belonging to former Member of Parliament Anjani Kumar Yadav, located in interior parts of Hussaini Alam police station limits for Rs 20,000 and has been doing business of Rs 1 crore every month.

“A few days ago, a citizen passed on the information about the racket to the Telangana Director General of Police through Facebook, which led to the arrest,” the DCP said.

He added that during the raids, the teams had seized huge quantities of adulterated spices and also chemicals used in manufacturing the spices.

The DCP said that sodium hydrosulphite is used in textiles and fibre processing units to brighten their colour, while sStone powder is used in manufacturing of detergents, iron oxide to colour plastic.

“Consumption of these chemicals in any form is highly hazardous. We will unearth more about the racket by inquiring the accused,” DCP Satyanarayana added.
