Mahbubnagar: The Mahbubnagar police busted a gang of seven members on Monday who were involved in the theft of ‘Nandi’ statue from the Nandeeshwara Temple at Gondyala village of Hanwada mandal in the district. According to Mahbubnagar Superintendent of Police P Vishwa Prasad, a seven-member gang was involved in the theft that happened on February 25, 2016.

“As the ‘Nandi’ idol is famous and is being worshipped since ages, the gang lead by one Chityala Krishnaiah, Physical Director of Pratibha Junior College at Mahbubnagar along with Saake Venkataramana, a government employee working as labour officer at Mahbubnagar Labour Office and five others, decided steal the idol from the temple as they believed it contained gold and diamond treasures inside it,” the SP said.

The police chief said that they stole it by digging with crowbars and hammers and broke it into pieces but found nothing. Later, they were on to loot some other religious place, but the police caught the culprits during questioning of a special vehicle inspection drive on Monday.

“It is unfortunate even educated people and government employees are thinking foolishly to earn easy money by digging hidden treasure and looting idols from temples. They looted it on the night of February 25 and took it to an isolated place at Akkamma lake of Mujahidpur and broke the idol into pieces for gold and diamonds from it,” Vishwa Prasad said.

He appreciated the Hanwada police for successfully nabbing the gang members. Cases under IPC 295 for hurting religious sentiments of the people were booked, the SP said.
