Hyderabad: The Crime Investigation Department, which had intensified the investigation into the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund scam, on Tuesday arrested five middlemen. The fraudsters in collusion with private hospitals had usurped Rs 73.69 lakh. A few days ago 10 persons were arrested. Five more are yet to be nabbed.

The CID was entrusted with the CMRF scam case in 2015 by Arogya Sri Health Care Trust (AHCT). The investigation agency identified the role of 20 brokers after scrutinising 11,600 applications. The role of brokers was unearthed during the verification of the medical records.

As many as 112 fake bills were created by the brokers. “Some of the brokers prepared fake letter-heads of hospitals, collected case sheets of the genuine patients with the help of lower staff in some of the hospitals and submitted applications in CMRF wing in the name of fake patients who never underwent any medical treatment. Victims were shown as residents of Telangana and other states, including Andhra Pradesh,” the investigating team said. The fake bills were claimed from 50 different hospitals.

About 20 days ago, the investigating team had arrested 10 persons who had acted as brokers and fraudulently claimed the ex gratia. CID in its earlier report submitted to the Chief Minister stated that the employees of various hospitals in Karimnagar, Nalgonda, Hyderabad, Warangal and Nizamabad had a role in the scam.
