Hyderabad: Two members of a gang of kidnappers were arrested from Haryana for luring two businessmen from city with a lucrative offer and then extorting money from his family detaining him illegally.

The arrested include Shakeel and Akbar of Palwal district in Haryana. The police said the gang had 15 more members and efforts would be made to nab them.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Detective Department, Avinash Mohanty, said the gang contacted Pradyuman Lohia and Bharat Lila, both leading manufacturers of copper wire and offered to sell lot of copper scrap at Rs 320 kg, which was much lesser than the prevailing market price.

Lured with the offer, the duo along with another person went to Delhi on May 19 where they were picked up by Shakeel on pretext of going to Bharatpur where the copper scrap was available.

On the way, their car was stopped by Shakeel’s associates, who snatched a gold chain, cash worth Rs 2.90 lakh, debit and credit cards and other belongings from the businessmen threatening with firearms, the DCP said.

Later, the gang took them to Gavdi village in Bharatpur district, confined them in Akbar’s house and fired a few shots in the air to terrify the victims before making it clear that they had been kidnapped for ransom, the DCP said.

The gang demanded Rs 1.20 crore but finally agreed to leave them on payment of Rs 50 lakh. Pradyuman’s family transferred the money to Akbar’s account. Then the gang handed over the victims to Sarju, where they were asked to pay another Rs 20 lakh as final settlement of the ransom. However, the victims managed to alert their families about the kidnap and conveyed them to seek police help.

The deal was fixed for Rs 10 lakh and the victims managed to convince the kidnappers to take them to an open place before the money was transferred to their accounts.

When the victims were made to sit in a vehicle on a busy road, they managed to escape and board a bus. They borrowed a passenger’s phone and informed their family before reaching a local police station and with the help of local police they returned to Hyderabad on May 21.

In the meantime, the Hyderabad police could freeze Akbar’s bank account and save little over Rs 37 lakh of the ransom money. Also, a case was registered on the complaint of Pradyuman and a special team went to Haryana.

After a weeklong investigation, the special team could arrest two of the kidnappers, got frozen six bank accounts, seized mobile phones and other documents.
