Students re-create a Periodic Table to celebrate importance of science
Bangalore: In a bid to acknowledge the contributions of noble laureate scientist Sir C V Raman in the field of science and educate fellow students about the role of science in their daily lives, students from Canadian International celebrated national science day by recreating a Periodic Table at their school campus. More than 100 students participated in creating a visual layout of the periodic table under the able guidance of CIS teacher Sita Venkataraman. Acknowledging the need to teach the complex concepts of chemistry in simpler ways and help students understand how various elements of periodic table play a vital role in their daily lives, the teacher adopted this unique method to make learning fun for them.
The National Science Day is celebrated every year on February 28th as a remembrance of Sir C V Raman and his discovery the ‘Raman effect’. The day aims to propagate the message on importance of applying science and technology in daily life.
Abhinav Balaji, student, Canadian International School who took part in creating the periodic table said: “The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry declared 2019 as the year of the Periodic Table. To celebrate this and National Science Day, we planned out an activity at school premises by holding up placards of the elements to create a periodic table. This was a great opportunity for us to be a part of something small which holds a greater meaning. We learnt a lot about the various elements through this activity.”
“Creating a human periodic table was an engaging way to celebrate science. Unique activity such as this not only offers a more creative approach towards improving learning experience among the students but also ensures that they perform better during the exams as practical representation of concepts often offers a better recall. CIS is a school that has been pioneering the use of science and technology in the classroom and National Science Day naturally resonates with these beliefs. Sir C V Raman’s contribution to the field of science was immense and we at CIS salute him,” said Shweta Sastri, Managing Director, Canadian International School.
