Warangal: Lack of infrastructure, teaching and non-teaching staff and funds crunch has thrown the university system in the State into doldrums, said T JAC Chairman Prof M Kodandaram.
As a result the university education system was getting affected badly, he said while calling upon the university teachers, employees and students to make collective efforts to protect and safeguard the university system.
Prof Kodandaram addressed a gathering at Kakatiya University here on Thursday on the ‘Challenges in higher education in Telangana State - Role of public and private universities’, marking the Pensioners Day. The programme was organised by Kakatiya University Retired Teachers’ Association (KURTA).
He held liberal economic policies being adopted by the State and Central governments across the country as the root cause behind the decline of the university education system. The governments, which have neglected to recruit the teaching staff, should have increased the retirement age of the university teachers.
Increasing the retirement age would help to address shortage of faculty to some extent. The retired teachers should organise themselves and make suggestions to the State government and put pressure in this regard, he added.
The T JAC Chairman further wanted thorough changes in the syllabus and internal administration of the universities to face the competition from private universities which were mushrooming across India.
Telangana State Council for Higher Education Chairman Prof T Papi Reddy addressing the gathering informed that the State government was making efforts to appoint Vice-Chancellors wherever there were vacancies by January 2016.
Appointing the V-Cs would not resolve all problems. The teachers and students, who played a key role in achieving separate Telangana State, should also make efforts to increase standards in state-run universities, he added. KURTA president SM Reddy, general secretary E Ram Reddy, treasurer M Krishnaiah, senior professors S Parmaji, K Seetarama Rao and K Ramanaiah were present.
16 retired teachers felicitated on the occasion. A similar programme was organised by Kakatiya University Non-teaching Retired Employees Association. MLA D Vinay Bhasker addressing the gathering promised that the problems of pensioners would be taken to the government’s notice to address them.
The University Registrar, Prof Khaja Altaf Hussain, KU Non-teaching JAC Chairman P Kondal Reddy, the Association president A Raghavaraju, general secretary NSR Murthy and others were present.
