According to police, the 71-year-old Macherla Suryanaryana boarded an auto at Ala Hospital in Guntur to go to Mangalagiri bus stand at about 10 am on March 23. The auto driver, along with his friend , after bringing him to the bus stand asked him where he was to go. Suryanarayana, believing them, disclosed that he was going to visit his ailing relative in Mangalagiri. The criminal-duo offered him to drop at the place, but took him to an isolated place beside NRI hospital, attacked him with stones and robbed him of valuables in his possession which included a gold ring and Rs 500 in cash. The old man, in an unconscious state was admitted to NRI Hospital by some people going that way. Police booked a case and started investigation. Police identified the culprits as one Pathan Gouse Basha of old city in Guntur and Sheik Basha of Nambur village in Kakani mandal and nabbed them when they arrived a lodge on Station Road on Tuesday. Police said the duo were habitual offenders. The culprits were produced before magistrate for remand.
