As soon as the KCR government came to power, the Chief Minister directed the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to ensure that Hyderabad became a slum free city. In a survey conducted by the corporation recently, 72 slums were identified under the ‘Slum Free Hyderabad project’. Of this 52 would be remodelled.

The slums at Uppal, LB Nagar, Goshamahal, Nampally and Abids have been identified where two-bedroom houses would be provided to the dwellers.

As per the survey, there are 33 slums at the central zone of which 10 are in Musheerabad. The west zone has 18 slums in Patancheru, Serilingampally and Kukatpally. The east zone has five slums, south zone has nine and north zone has seven slums.

“Only four states and union territories across the country have zero slum population, including Manipur, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu and Lakshadweep,” stated the National Census of 2011.

Of the 72 slums, more than 26 are on government land, 25 are partly owned by the government and private bodies and five are on encroached land.

“It is not possible to make policies without having proper data of the slum population. Every time there is a new policy we have to reconsider the beneficiaries and this is creating confusion,” said a GHMC official.
