The Air Costa 79th Senior National Badminton Championship for Women and Men started at the Funtimes Club and Vijayawada Club on Thursday. The championship, which will conclude on February 5, is a ranking tournament for badminton players.
Speaking at the inaugural event, Municipal Commissioner G Veerapandian said that the organisers had made elaborate arrangements for the smooth conduct of the tournament.
“Facilities for the national championship are excellent. It is a good opportunity for budding badminton players to showcase their talent,” he said.
MLA Gadde Ramamohan said that the State government was encouraging sports in a big way in Andhra Pradesh.
The Dandamudi Rajagopal Rao Municipal Corporation (DRMC) Indoor Stadium has been renovated at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore for the tournament, which is being held in Vijayawada after a gap of 36 years.
“The State government is keen to organise more national level tournaments to promote sports in Andhra Pradesh,” the MLA said.
The qualifying rounds for women and men are being held at Funtimes Club and Vijayawada Club simultaneously on Thursday and Friday. Interstate competitions would be organised on January 31 and February 1. As many as 634 entries were received for the qualifying round matches.
