Hitec City, which was the first area chosen by the government to be Wi-Fi enabled last year, will now be completely wireless. All the overhead electric wires in and around Hitec City will be replaced by underground cables in a few months. The Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TSIIC) will begin underground cabling works at Madhapur and Gachibowli initially with an aim to boost image of the city.

The project will be taken up from Raheja Mindspace to Inorbit Mall on one stretch and Mindspace to Biodiversity Park on the other. The total distance of 2.5 km will cost the exchequer about Rs15 crore. E Venkat Narsimha Reddy, vice-chairman and MD, TSIIC, said, “This project will give a facelift to the area as the sight of the overhead wires is spoiling the ambience.

We wish to complete the project in eight months. Based on the results of the pilot project, similar work will be undertaken throughout Cyberabad. All the upcoming industrial parks will have a similar design with no overhead cables or wires.” The tender process is under way and multiple government departments will be involved in the initiative.

Either side of the road will be dug up for about 2 feet in depth and 1.5 feet in width for the project. “The electricity wires as well as communication cables would pass through the ducts and a pre-cast slab will be placed above the ducts. At various designated points, provision will be made to open the slab for repair or extension works. The underground cabling track could be used for pedestrian or cycling purpose,” Reddy added.
