Even as the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) workers remain on strike, the South Zone Police on Sunday conducted the Swachh Hyderabad programme to clear heaps of garbage accumulated in various parts of Old City.

When some of the municipal workers protested against the police, they were taken into custody near Charminar. Led by DCP South Zone V Satyanarayana, the cops lifted brooms and started clearing the debris after media reports highlighted the accumulation of filth near Charminar.

The force, who also engaged some private people for the task, were challenged by the local municipal workers. They requested the cops to disengage from the work while they were on agitation mode. However the police officials retorted and when the some of the leaders representing the workers protested, they were arrested.

The DCP informed that the programme was not against any individuals or unions but was voluntarily taken up by the police. “Since we are part of the society, we want the city to be clean. Hence we took up the task of cleaning the area voluntarily. We will take action on anyone who will hinder us,” warned Satyanarayana.

With the GHMC workers’ strike entering the eight day, police officials in different parts of the city have been asked to voluntarily contribute to the Swachh Hyderabad programme by city commissioner M Mahendar Reddy.
