A grand procession carrying the idol of Mahaveer Tirthankara on a sumptuously decorated silver chariot was taken out through the main streets on Sunday at the ‘Paryushana Parva’ celebrations at Shri Kunthunath Shvetamber Jain Derasar at Rani Gunj.

The Jain followers visited the temples early morning and offered special Poojas. Community members took part in a Rathyatra starting from Shri Kunthunath Shvetamber Jain Derasar to Sri Parshva Padmavati Bhavan organised to promote world peace.

Explaining the significance of the occasion, community member, Kiran Shah said, “The deepest spiritual period of the year arrives for Jains with the festival of Paryushana.

Jains observe adherent fasts for eight days for the renewal of their faith. In comparison to other world religions, Jainism incorporates an especially deep concern and respect for all living beings, from animals and insects, to plants and root vegetables.”

There were arrangements of cold drinks at several points to give relief to the participants in the procession. Children and adults alike danced at the colourful procession at the end of which, 425 birds were released as a mark of peace.
