Khammam: Not withstanding the fact that Khammam district is bestowed with abundant natural resources, the region, especially after the formation of Telangana State, hasn’t witnessed any sort of development much to the disappointment of the people albeit with an exception–a step forward in the proposal of establishing an airport and India Reserve Battalion (IRB) both in Kothagudem.
On the grounds that Telangana is one among the 12 Maoist-affected states in the country, the Centre proposed to raise four IRBs in the State. The Telangana State Cabinet issued orders sanctioning four IRBs of special police to be raised in Khammam, Warangal, Adilabad and Rangareddy districts in September. Hitherto, there are four existing battalions one each in Adilabad, Nalgonda Mahbubnagar and Karimnagar districts in the State. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs schedule, two IRBs have to be raised during 2014-15 and one each in 2015-16 and 2016-17.
Since then, the Khammam district administration, which scouted for a suitable location for the IRB, zeroed it on Chatakonda village in Kothagudem mandal. Though the requirement is said to be 150 acres, the revenue officials demarcated 117 acres and handed it over to the government for the purpose.
It’s estimated that each IRB would generate at least 1,400 posts of all ranks from constable to commandant, besides quite a few contractual posts, according to official sources. The basic development of each IRB would cost the government around Rs 94.92 crore. Of which the State has to bear Rs 43.73 crore and the rest by the Centre.
The project, which will have a township that includes training and residential facilities, is expected to give livelihood opportunity to at least 10,000 people indirectly. It may be mentioned here that the 15th TSSP Battalion established at Gangaram village in Sathupalli mandal a few years ago has been recruiting local tribal youth from notified Scheduled areas.
The 15th Battalion Commandant K Nagaraju, who took possession of 117 acres, said: “Chatakonda village is ideally suited for raising the battalion, which is fifth in the State.”
Kothagudem MLA Jalagam Venkata Rao said: “The district administration is conducting a survey to acquire another 33 acres. Meanwhile, the IRB authorities will commence their work. The recruitment process is expected begin at any time.”
