Hyderabad: While the Environment Ministry is holding a meeting in the national capital to take a decision on introducing genetically modified (GM) mustard, agriculture scientists, farmers and environmentalists, who congregated at Prof Jayasankar Agriculture University for a three-day National Convergence on Permaculture here on Friday expressed their concern and called for a complete ban on the GM food crop.

Eminent environmentalist and a staunch opponent of GM crops, Dr Vandana Shiva has expressed concern about the policies of successive governments. She elaborated how the chemical fertiliser industry is destroying the agricultural ecosystem and the rural areas.

She appealed the gathering to strongly voice their opposition to the government’s plans. The Chief Secretary of AP government, S P Thakkar, and Principal Secretary of Agriculture and Cooperation of Telangana, C Parthasarathi discussed the efforts of their governments in encouraging eco-friendly agricultural practices.

The word Permaculture is derived from two words permanent and agriculture. The Permaculture movement was started by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren in Australia in 1978. It propagates an alternative agricultural system which meets primary needs of human beings such as food, energy and shelter without disturbing the harmony of nature.

The three-day meet is being hosted by Aranya, an organisation dedicated to Permaculture, and it will discuss the eco-friendly practices in agriculture. The meet is being attended by several Permaculture practitioners and experts of organic farming such as Claude Alvares, Dr Sultan Ismail, Dr GV Ramanjaneyulu, Sagari R Ramdas and hundreds of farmers from different states and foreign countries.
