If Srivatsa Krishna, 1994 IAS gold medalist of Karnataka cadre, had inspired me to have a go at the Civil Services, it was The Hans India that helped me a lot to enrich my knowledge,” 26-year-old CM Saikanth Varma, trainee IAS (2015), who is in Bhadrachalam as part of his Bharat Darshan study tour, said.

Bhadrachalam: “If Srivatsa Krishna, 1994 IAS gold medalist of Karnataka cadre, had inspired me to have a go at the Civil Services, it was The Hans India that helped me a lot to enrich my knowledge,” 26-year-old CM Saikanth Varma, trainee IAS (2015), who is in Bhadrachalam as part of his Bharat Darshan study tour, said.

Saikanth, an ex-employee of Google and Amazon, and an alumnus of IIT-Madras, is one among the 20-member team, which visited Venkateswara Khani coal mine near Kothagudem on Friday. Cracking UPSC wasn’t his dream until he came across an inspiring speech by the IAS Srivatsa when he was pursuing B Tech computer science at Chennai. In a nutshell, the speech was about ‘what an IAS can do to the society’.

The fire in Saikanth, who hails from a middleclass family of Kurnool city where his father is a self-employed, carried even when he was working with the Google and Amazon in Hyderabad. Although he had joined a coaching centre to get prepared for the civil services, Saikanth says: “One should not give prominence to coaching. It all depends on how we focus and prepare.

The UPSC syllabi are clear on what aspects we have to focus.” Talking on their ongoing winter study tour, he said that the hands-on experience they were getting was of immense help. There is a lot to learn from Khammam as the district boasts Agency, quite a few industries, historical places and coal mines,

Saikanth said, looking ahead for Phase-I and II pan-India exposure they were to get in the next one-and-a-half year training. Saikanth, who did his entire schooling in Hyderabad albeit he hails from Kurnool city, is a regular reader of The Hans India. “It helped me a lot during my preparation for the IAS,” he said.
