The sluice gate of the historic Hussain Sagar Lake was lifted after 15 years on Wednesday. The gate, devised for controlling the water level of the Lake, was opened to discharge excess water that accumulated due to the downpour, which lashed the city in the morning.

The sluice gate of the 453-year-old Lake was last opened on August 21, 2000. Due to the heavy rainfall, water levels in the Lake reached at around 513.41m against its full tank capacity 513.60m. The water accumulated in the Lake caused trouble for motorists due to the close proximity of the road to the water body.

To avoid danger, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) authorities including Mayor Bonthu Rammohan and GHMC Commissioner, B Janardhan Reddy opened the sluice gate and diverted the excess water to low-lying areas.

The alarmed GHMC authorities have also alerted residents of low-lying areas like Kavadiguda, Ashok Nagar,
Himayathnagar, Narayanaguda and Amberpet. Mayor Bonthu Rammohan said that the residents were asked to be ready for evacuation if rainfall continued for the next few days.

Cautioning the residents of the areas, the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister, K T Rama Rao tweeted asking citizens to take precautions. Meanwhile, the civic body will release 120 cusecs of water on a daily basis. The Lake has the capacity to hold 1 TMC of water.
