Mahabubabad: Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) located at Dharmanna Colony at district headquarters is surrounded by a scenic view with a pond having water lilies floating on it.
But neither the students nor the staff at the school could cherish the view. The pond created by backwaters of Krishnaswamy kunta, situated on the backside of the school, is causing untold miseries to them.
The pond has cut off access to the school, which is built in the limits of the full tank level. If anyone has to reach the school, they have to tread knee deep waters that enclosed the schools’ main entrance since two months.
The tank received good inflows due to recent torrential rains and excess waters inundated the school premises and it’s outside area.
The standing pool of water is a clear example of apathy of local legislators and the officials towards students, who belong to SC/ST/BC communities. Incidentally, the KGBV is located very close to the newly set up Mahabubabad district Collectorate.
The students made many complaints to educational and other concerned officers. But to no avail. ‘Drainage water from nearby colonies is also flowing into the pond.
With the water getting stagnated here, it has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which has become a menace to us,’ complained a student, B Swathi. Sometimes poisonous creatures like scorpions and snakes also make an appearance, she added.
Local CPI leaders led by Brahmanapally Ajay Saradhi visited the school on Tuesday in order to highlight the student’s plight.
The students and the staff are facing trouble if they want to go out to get food grains and vegetables and others provisions for their use and for the hostel, he said.
“Majority of tje students here are tribals. Both assembly and parliament constituencies are represented by tribal leaders, yet they do not act to redress the problem,” he lamented while speaking to The Hans India.
He wanted MLA B Shanker Naik and MP Prof A Seetaram Naik to pay attention to the problems being faced by the KGBV students.
There is an electric transformer standing in the pool of water and if anything goes wrong it could claim the lives of the students, he worried.
Immediate steps should be taken to drain out the water and to elevate the ground around the school by dumping soil.
The school’s approach road should be asphalted as the existing mud road has been washed away due to recent rains, he demanded.
When contacted, the School Principal B Bhavani said the issue has been taken to the notice of higher officials and their response is awaited.
‘We are planning to meet the District Collector Preethi Meena soon seeking her intervention,’ she added.
