Cops turn Good Samaritans

Following the Commissioner’s orders, the cops brought as many as 88 destitute people wandering aimlessly as lunatics. Their hair was cut and they were bathed and given new clothes to wear with the help of ‘Amma Nanna Anaadha Ashramam’, a non-profit organisation in Nalgonda.

Ramagundam: Police officers known to maintain a tough countenance, but many nurse a soft corner deep inside their heart to render social service.City Police Commissioner Vikram Jeet Duggal turned and other cops turned Good Samaritans, by launching ‘Punarjanma’ (rebirth) programme here on Monday to provide rehabilitation to about 88 mentally ill persons, wandering aimlessly in Mancherial and Peddapalli districts.
Following the Commissioner’s orders, the cops brought as many as 88 destitute people wandering aimlessly as lunatics. Their hair was cut and they were bathed and given new clothes to wear with the help of ‘Amma Nanna Anaadha Ashramam’, a non-profit organisation in Nalgonda.
Vikram Jeet made them to introduce themselves to others in the group. After a prolonged dialogue with them, it came to know that each of these had a different story of success and failure, finally ending up as lunatics.Earlier also, Duggal rehabilitated 30 persons in Nizamabad and 105 in Nalgonda and got them admitted to Amma Naanna Ashram, where the inmates were taught yoga besides helping them inculcate good habits. The Commissioner seems to have nursed an ambition to lend support to them from the government by submitting a report through the DGP.
During counseling, a rehabilitated person Ravi Kumar said ‘I lost mental balance when the girl I loved deeply married another person. I do not know the whereabouts of my family members and friends. The cops are trying to locate their details to reunite me with them.’
Remembering his past, a member of the Ashram Appa Rao said that he used to work as a teacher in the past. ‘After going through severe ill health, I ended up on the streets. No one came near me and I went without food for several days.’ He expressed happy that the Ashram people treated him well and added that he will spend the rest of his life with his family members.
